Error: "Database Could Not Be Found" (CLIENT Computer)
Symptom:
When opening ALLDATA® ManageSM, the following pop-up message appears:

"Database could not be found. Please enter the name of the computer that contains the database."
Possible Cause(s):
-
The CLIENT computer was turned on before the SERVER computer was turned on.
-
Communication between the SERVER computer and the CLIENT computer is broken.
-
The incorrect SERVER Computer Name was entered in the CLIENT computer.
-
The Microsoft SQL Configuration Manager settings need to be adjusted.
-
The Firewall is blocking the connection.
Suggested Solution(s):
The solutions are listed in order of what most frequently resolves the error. Follow all of the steps for one solution before moving to the next, if needed.

If you still get the Database Could Not Be Found window after trying one solution and restarting your ALLDATA Manage program, use your Internet browser's back button/arrow to return to these instructions and move to the next solution.
Step 1: Turn computers on in the correct sequence

Turn off all of the computers that have ALLDATA Manage installed.

Turn on the SERVER Computer and open ALLDATA Manage.
-
Turn on the CLIENT Computer and open ALLDATA Manage.
-
If the Database Could Not Be Found window pops up, move to the next step.
Step 2: Disable the Firewall

Please contact your Firewall Manufacturer for support and instructions on how to disable (turn off) your firewall.

On the CLIENT computer, open ALLDATA Manage.
-
Re-enable (turn on) your Firewall.
-
If the Database Could Not Be Found window pops up, move to the next step.
Step 3: Make sure that your network is communicating

From the SERVER Computer:
-
For Windows XP: right-click on (My) Computer >> left-click on Properties to look up the name of the computer >> click on the Computer Name tab to find the Full Computer Name.

For Windows Vista / Windows 7: right-click on (My) Computer >> left-click on Properties to look up the name of the computer >> the Full Computer Name is in the middle of the System Properties page.

For Windows 8.1: right-click the Start Menu >> select Settings >> the Full Computer Name is in the middle of the System page.
-
Windows 10: right-click the Start Menu >> select Settings >> Device Name is in the middle of the About page.
-

From the CLIENT Computer, open a Command Prompt window.
-
For Windows XP, click Start >> Run >> type cmd in the input field >> click OK.
-
For Windows Vista / Windows 7, click Start >> Search >> type cmd >> click on Command.
-
For Windows 8.1 / Windows 10: right-click the Start Menu >> select Run >> type cmd in the input field >> click OK.
-
Or, for any Windows user, press the Windows key and the R key on the keyboard at the same time to open the Run window >> type in cmd >> click OK.

In the Command Prompt window, type in ping >> then a space (using the space bar) >> then type the Full Computer Name for the SERVER Computer >> press Enter.

There are three possible results:
-
If it displays, write down the IP Address (Example: 192.168.1.2):
Good Result: C:\> ping server-computer
Pinging server-computer [192.168.1.2] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=52

If your result is a Good Result or Acceptable Result, your network IS communicating. Continue to Step 4.

If your result is a Bad Result, your network is NOT communicating.

This is a network issue that has to be resolved by your Network Administrator or PC Technician. It can NOT be resolved by ALLDATA Customer Support.

Open ALLDATA Manage on the CLIENT computer. Enter the Computer Name of the SERVER Computer in the pop-up box >> Click OK.

See Step 1 for instructions for looking up the name of the SERVER computer.

Open ALLDATA Manage. If the Database Could Not Be Found window pops up, move to Step 5.

Still on the CLIENT computer, enter the IP Address of the SERVER Computer in the pop-up box (in the same place you previously entered the computer name) >> Click OK.

To look up the SERVER Computer IP Address:
-
From the SERVER Computer, press the Windows Key and the R key on the keyboard at the same time.
-
Result: A RUN window will open on the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Type CMD in the Open input field and click OK.
-
Result: A Command Prompt window will open.
-

Type ipconfig and press Enter.
-
Result:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : dhcp
IP Address......................... : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask...................... : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway.................. : 192.168.1.1 -
Note: There may be multiple Ethernet adapter Local Area Conections depending on how your network is set-up.

Open ALLDATA Manage. If the Database Could Not Be Found window pops up, move to the next step.

Step 4: Check the Microsoft SQL Configuration Manager settings on the SERVER Computer

Click HERE for instructions. Follow the directions of the FIRST solution listed.

If the network is NOT communicating, this is a network issue that has to be resolved by your Network Administrator or PC Technician.

It can NOT be resolved by ALLDATA Customer Support.

If the network IS communicating, open ALLDATA Manage. If the Database Could Not Be Found window pops up, please contact Customer Support.
