Problem: The owner of this Silverado was concerned about the brakes on his truck. Intermittently while braking, the truck’s front end will shake violently.

Case Details: The violent shake only occurred while braking, but once it started, it would happen on each subsequent brake application until the truck was shut off and restarted.

The technician checked the steering gear. It had excessive play in it, so he replaced it. The symptom persisted so he called ALLDATA Tech-Assist.

The Tech-Assist consultant surmised that, since the brake system was equipped with a hydroboost hydraulic brake booster, and the problem only occurred while braking, it could very well be a faulty hydroboost unit.

The consultant recommended to first inspect the entire front end (steering linkages, tie rod ends, ball joints, hub bearings, and bushings, etc.). If no issues were found, a faulty hydroboost unit was the logical source of the problem.

Confirmed Repair:

The technician inspected the front end as advised and found nothing loose or worn. He replaced the hydroboost unit and road-tested the truck to verify the repairs. There was a lot of good braking and no more shaking. Fixed!
