Camaro Won’t Release Ignition Key – DTC U0121
Feb. 01 2022
Feb. 01 2022

Vehicle: 2011 Chevrolet Camaro, V8-6.2L, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 142,002

Problem: The vehicle owner says that the engine started and ran fine but, when she tried to shut the engine off, the key was stuck in the ignition switch and could not be removed.

Case Details: First, the technician verified that the engine started and ran okay, and that the ignition key would not release from the lock cylinder. Next, he connected a scan tool and found only one diagnostic trouble code (DTC):  U0121 Lost Communication with Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).

At that point he called an ALLDATA Tech-Assist consultant who recommended that he verify the underhood and instrument panel fuse block fuses had battery (B+) voltage and were not open or missing. He also advised verifying EBCM power, ground and communication circuit integrity.

The Tech found the 20A EBCM #1 Fuse in the instrument panel fuse block was open.

Confirmed Repair: The technician checked the contacts and installed a new fuse. After that, EBCM communication was restored, and the ignition key could be removed. The DTC was cleared and did not return after a thorough test drive. Fixed!
